The worst thing you can do is to do nothing. The debt will not go away and it will remain on your credit report for seven years. Sometimes, the debt will be there longer because the debt collection agencies sell debts that cannot be collected and even though that debt has been removed from your credit report, it can find its way back in your file when a new debt collection agency takes over and reports the debt to the credit bureau.
