For those of us who have gotten a little (or a lot) over our heads in credit card debt, life can be tiring and stressful.  Let’s face it; money matters cause stress, unless of course you have a lot of it and don’t worry too much about being able to pay your bills each month.

Excessive credit card debt is the number one reason that most people fall behind in payments, and it also the number one reason that people have a fear of going to the mailbox. If you are struggling with excessive credit card debt, you may indeed dread opening your email or walking down the driveway to get your mail because you fear there is going to be another bill in there.

Having excessive credit card debt can hurt your credit rating, cause you financial and emotional stress, and keep you from sleeping at night, so if you are not yet faced with having a lot of credit card bills, do the smart thing and avoid excessive credit card debt by keeping a tight reign on your spending habits.

  • Seek out a credit counseling company and get their assistance with reducing or eliminating your excessive credit card debt.
  • Hire an attorney or other professional who specializes in debt management.
  • Get the services of a nonprofit credit agency.
  • File either Chapter Seven or Chapter Thirteen bankruptcy for a fresh start.

The Process Begins With You

No matter which way you choose to go, there are certain things that you can and should do to help yourself get out of debt.  If you decide to use the services of a professional, he or she will likely do them on your behalf, but be aware that you may be able to do a lot of them yourself.

Stop, Re-negotiate, Recover

The first thing you need to do is stop using your credit cards.  The next thing you should do is re-negotiate your debts.  It may seem like an impossible task, but you can actually contact your creditors and get your interest rate reduced, your outstanding balance reduced, annual fees waived, and/or outstanding service charges deleted.
